MSBBN: "There Was an Error Programming the Base Station" Error Message When You Try to Configure Your Base Station (823369)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Broadband Networking 10 100 Ethernet Wired Base Station MN100
  • Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station MN500

SYMPTOMS

When you try to configure your Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station MN-500 or Broadband Networking 10 100 Ethernet Wired Base Station MN-100, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
There was an error programming the base station. There may be a software firewall running or you may need to factory reset the base station.
This issue occurs although there is no firewall installed. When you reset the base station, you continue to receive this error message.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if a third-party program interferes with the configuration of the base station.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Connect your modem to your computer (bypass the base station).
  2. Reset the base station to the factory default settings.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Verify that your Internet connection is working.
  5. Make sure that any nonessential programs are not running.

    For more information about how to do this, see the "More Information" section of this article.
  6. Reconnect your base station to your modem, and then rerun the setup program.
  7. Restart your computer as you typically do.

    If you use the clean boot method that is described in the "More information" section of this article, you may have to repeat the procedure and undo the changes that you made.
  8. If your network or Internet connection is not functioning after you perform this procedure, you may have to turn the power for the modem and the base station off for 20 seconds, and then turn the power back on again.

Microsoft Windows XP

Perform a clean boot to start Windows XP without starting any nonessential programs that may start automatically when you start Windows XP. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Process WIn.ini File and Load Startup Items check boxes but leave the Process System.ini File check box selected.

    You cannot click to clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.
  3. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.

Microsoft Windows 2000

Quit any nonessential programs that may be running. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Type CTRL+ALT+DEL, and then click Task Manager.
  2. Click the Applications tab.
  3. Under Tasks, click any nonessential programs that are listed, and then click End Task.
  4. Close the Windows Task Manager.
  5. On the Windows Taskbar, examine the notification area on the right side.

    Each icon that appears there represents a service or background program that is running on your computer. Rest your mouse pointer over each icon to display a message that identifies what program or service each icon represents.
  6. Right-click the icon for each nonessential program or service, and then click the appropriate option to turn it off.

    For example, right-click your Windows Messenger icon, and then click Exit.
  7. Do not restart your computer until you have resolved the issue that is described in this article, or you may have to repeat this procedure.

    When you restart your computer, any programs that are configured to start automatically should start, returning your computer to its previous state.

Microsoft Windows Millennium (Me)

Perform a clean boot to start Windows Millennium (Me) without starting any nonessential programs that may start automatically when you start Windows Millennium (Me). To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective startup.
  3. Click to clear all the check boxes under Selective startup.
  4. On the Startup tab, click to select the StateMgr check box.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Restart your computer.

Microsoft Windows 98

Perform a clean boot to start Windows 98 without starting any nonessential programs that may start automatically when you start Windows 98. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK to start the System Configuration Utility.
  3. Click the General tab, and then click Selective startup.
  4. Under Selective startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process Config.sys file
    • Process Autoexec.bat file
    • Process Winstart.bat file (if it is available and not already cleared)
    • Load startup group items
  5. Click the Win.ini tab, expand the [windows] folder, and then click to clear the load= and run= check boxes.
  6. Click OK, and then restart the computer.
