PRB: Hide Adult Titles Option in the IPG Guide Does Not Hide All Adult Program Information (823341)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft TV IPG 1.5

SYMPTOMS

When you turn on the Hide Adult Titles option in the IPG Guide, some titles and descriptions of adult programs appear in the guide.

CAUSE

The Hide Adult Titles option in the IPG Guide hides the titles and the descriptions of programs that are intended for an adult audience. When you turn on the Hide Adult Titles option, the adult program titles throughout the guide (in grids, information regions, and the channel bar, for example) are replaced with the text Adult Programming. Also, the program descriptions for these adult programs do not appear. However, the rating of the program still appears in the program information regions.

The TV listings service provider includes the program rating information in the guide data. Adult programming includes any program that has one of the following Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings:
  • MPAA::NC-17
  • MPAA::AO (Adult Only)
  • MPAA::X (AO and X are equivalent)
When you turn on the Hide Adult Titles option, the IPG product locates all programs that are rated MPAA::NC-17 or MPAA::AO. If the TV listings service provider receives an adult program or movie that has a rating of Not Rated, the TV listings service provider may add a TV Parental Guidelines rating of TV-MA before the service sends the content to the Multiple Service Operator (MSO). Because the TV-MA rating has no corresponding adult programming MPAA rating, any program that has this rating is not blocked.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, notify the TV listings service that all adult programs that appear in the TV Listings Data that it provides to the MSO must be rated MPAA::NC-17 or MPAA::AO.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The movie rating system is defined by the MPAA. This rating system is voluntary. The following are the current MPAA ratings:
  • MPAA::G
  • MPAA::PG
  • MPAA::PG-13
  • MPAA::R
  • MPAA::NC-17
  • MPAA::AO

    (The MPAA replaced the X rating with NC-17 and AO.)
To provide more information and greater control for parents, the TV Parental Guidelines ratings were created to work with the V-chip. The following are the TV Parental Guidelines ratings:
  • TV-Y
  • TV-Y7
  • TV-G
  • TV-PG
  • TV-14
  • TV-MA
