"The Configuration Database Shows That the Virtual Server Has Been Extended Already" Error Message When You Extend Virtual Server (823285)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services

SYMPTOMS

When you try to extend and create a new content database for your Windows SharePoint Services virtual server, you receive the following error message:
The configuration database shows that the virtual server has been extended already. To extend this virtual server, click "Extend and map to another virtual server" in the Provisioning Options section of the Extend Virtual Server page.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when a virtual server has been unextended but the content database has not been removed. When the content database remains, the virtual server entry is not removed from the virtual server table of the configuration database. This virtual server entry remains in the database to support future reconnections to the content database.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you must rename the virtual server so that the name does not match the entry in the existing configuration database. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. In the left pane, double-click your server name.
  3. In the left pane, double-click Web Sites
  4. Right-click your virtual server, and then click Rename.
  5. Type a new name for the virtual server, and then press ENTER.
