You receive an SQL access error message when you change the configuration database administrator account in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (823282)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you try to make changes to the configuration database administrator account on the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you receive a SQL access error message.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when you do not have security administrator permissions and database creator permissions on the target SQL server.

You must have these permissions to grant the new account the same permissions and to give it the dbowner role for all SharePoint Portal Server databases on the target SQL server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, grant the account the appropriate permissions, and then retry the operation. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start SQL Enterprise Manager.
  2. In the left pane, open the Security folder.
  3. Right-click the Logins node, and then click New Login.
  4. Click the Server Roles tab, and then click to select the following check boxes:
    • Database Creators
    • Security Administrators
  5. Click OK.
