Digest authentication and Advanced Digest authentication are not supported in Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (823279)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services

SUMMARY

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services does not support Digest authentication or Advanced Digest authentication. You cannot use Digest authentication or Advanced Digest authentication in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 with Windows SharePoint Services Web sites.

MORE INFORMATION

Digest authentication and Advanced Digest authentication are authentication methods that send user credentials over the network as an MD5 hash, where the original user name and password cannot be deciphered from the hash. The MD5 hash, also known as an MD5 message-digest, transmits a hash of the user's credentials in a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) header in an HTTP 1.1-compliant browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and later.

For more information about authentication methods in IIS 6.0, see the "Authentication" topic in the "Security" section of the Server Administration Guide of the IIS 6.0 documentation. To view the IIS 6.0 documentation, visit the following Microsoft Web site: For more information about how to deploy, configure, and administer SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services, see the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide. The Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide (Administrator's Help.chm) is located in the Docs folder in the root folder of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD.
