You cannot restore databases to the original server when you use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool (823267)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
SYMPTOMSWhen you use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to back up and restore portal data in a server farm deployment of SharePoint Portal Server, you may find that you cannot restore databases to the original server. There is not an option in the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to do so. However, you can use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to restore databases to other servers in the server farm.
For example, if you back up portal data in a server farm deployment of SharePoint Portal Server that has one database server, and you add a content database server and a component database server, there is not an option in the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to restore databases from the backup to the original server. However, you can restore databases from the backup to either of the two database servers that you later added to your server farm.RESOLUTIONTo work around this problem, provision a non-configuration database on the original server, and then restore the databases to the servers that you want in the server farm.
