MSBBN: "The MSIEXEC.EXE File Is Linked to a Missing Export MSI.DLL:222" Error Message When You Try to Install the Broadband Network Utility (823258)

SYMPTOMSWhen you try to install the Microsoft Broadband Networking
Utility (BNU) on your computer, you receive an error message similar to
the following: The MSIEXEC.EXE file is linked to a
missing export MSI.DLL:222 CAUSEThis issue may occur when you install the BNU on a computer
where the following conditions are both true:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition is the operating
system.
- You have a non-Microsoft antivirus program installed on your
computer. (This issue has been reported with McAfee
VShield.)
RESOLUTIONPart 1: Create a Startup Floppy DiskIf you have a startup floppy disk, go to part 2.
- Click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Startup Disk tab.
- Click Create Disk to create the startup
disk.
Note You may be prompted to insert the Windows Millennium Edition installation CD. - When you are prompted, insert a formatted floppy disk into
the floppy disk drive and then click OK to confirm overwriting the
contents of the floppy disk.
Part 2: Rename Files- Start your computer using the floppy start-up disk. To do
this, leave the floppy disk in the drive and restart your computer.
Note Your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) must be configured with the floppy drive as
the first startup device. If your computer does not start up from the floppy disk, see the documentation for your computer or motherboard or contact your computer manufacturer for information about how to edit your BIOS settings. - When you are prompted to select how to start, select
Minimum Boot.
- At the command prompt, type the following (press
ENTER after each line):
- c:
- cd \windows\system
- ren msi.dll msi.old
- ren msihnd.dll
msihnd.old
- ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
- Remove the floppy disk and then restart your
computer.
