SYMPTOMS

When you try to install or remove Microsoft Money, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • You receive an error message that is similar to one of the following:
Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one.
A previous version of Money is already installed.
The feature you are trying to use is on a net work resource or is unavailable.
  • You are repeatedly prompted to insert the Microsoft Money CD in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  • When you try to remove Money by using the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, Money does not appear in the list of currently installed programs.

CAUSE

The symptoms described in the "Symptoms" section may occur if Microsoft Windows Installer-related entries from a previous installation of Money are present in the Windows registry, and these registry entries prevent you from installing or removing Money.

RESOLUTION

To troubleshoot and resolve this issue, remove the Windows Installer-related registry entries for Money, and then install or remove Money (as appropriate to your situation). The following steps describe how to remove Money from your computer and how to manually remove Windows Installer-related entries that store Money information from the Windows registry.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Try to use the Add or Remove Programs tool to remove Money from your computer (if it is not already removed from your computer). To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
    3. In the list of currently installed programs, click Microsoft Money Version, and then click Remove.
    4. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove Money from your computer.
    5. In the list of currently installed programs, click Microsoft Money Version System Pack, and then click Remove.
    6. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the Money System Pack from your computer.
If you cannot remove Money by using the Add or Remove Programs tool, go to step 2.
  2. Start your computer in Safe mode. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. When you receive the following message, press F8:Please select the operating system to start
    3. On the Windows Advanced Option menu, use the ARROW keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
    4. If you have a dual-boot or multi-boot computer, select the appropriate operating system from the list that appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. Delete the following folder (if it exists on your hard disk) where Drive is the drive where Money is installed:

    Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Money

To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Start Windows Explorer.
    2. Locate the following folder, right-click the Microsoft Money folder, and then click Delete:

      Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Money

    3. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
  4. Shut down, and then restart your computer as you typically do.
  5. Click Start, and then click Run.
  6. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  7. Delete the Windows Installer-related registry keys for Money.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Important Make sure that you delete the correct registry keys. The 32-character alphanumeric names of the Windows Installer-related registry keys that store Money information and that appear in the list later in this article are specific to the version and edition of Money that is installed on your computer. For example, the names of the keys are different for Money 2003 Standard and Money Deluxe 2002.

The following is a list of the Windows Installer-related registry keys for Money that you must delete (if the keys are present in the registry on your computer), where <xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, <yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy>, <aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa>, and <bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb>, are 32-character alphanumeric strings that are specific to the version and edition of Money that is installed on your computer:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\<xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\<yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy>

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\<xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\<yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy>

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\<xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\<yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy>

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{<aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa>}

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{<bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb>}

Important Make sure that you delete the correct registry key. Before you delete the registry key, make sure that the key references Money and not another program. You must perform the following procedure to identify the key and confirm that it that stores Money information before you delete it.
    1. Click the registry key, and then in the right pane, double-click either the DisplayName or the ProductName value (as appropriate).

Note For the following registry key, the DisplayName value is stored in the InstallProperties subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\<xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Click the InstallProperties subkey, and then in the right pane, double-click the DisplayName value.
    2. Double-click the DisplayName or the ProductName value (as appropriate).
    3. Make a note of the value that appears in the Value data box.

If the value that appears in the Value data box is either Microsoft Money Version or Microsoft Money Version System Pack, you can delete the key that stores the value. Do not delete the key if the value that appears in the Value data box displays a value that is not related to Money.
    4. After you confirm that the key that you want to delete is related to Money, right-click the key, and then click Delete.
    5. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
  8. Install or remove Money (as appropriate to your situation).
