MS03-013 is not completely installed when you try to install it by using QChain.exe (823103)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

When you use the QChain.exe tool to install the MS02-050 and the MS03-013 hotfixes together, and then you use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) tool to verify the installation, MS03-013 is listed in the Patch Not Installed list. However, if you verify the installed files by their versions, all the MS03-013 files appear to be installed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because both of the following conditions are true:
  • The MS03-013 hotfix contains an incorrect checksum value.

    -and-
  • The MS03-013 hotfix contains some of the same files that MS02-050 contains.
When QChain compares the files that both MS02-050 and MS03-013 have in common, the incorrect checksum value prevents the MS03-013 version of the files from being installed. Specifically, the common files from MS02-050 have the same version numbers as those from MS03-013, and it is those files that are not replaced.
