Windows 2000 Server-Based Computer Stops Responding When You Restart After You Install McAfee Parental Controls (823043)

SYMPTOMS
When you install McAfee Parental Controls on a Windows 2000 Service Pack (SP) 3-based computer or a Windows 2000 SP4-based computer, and then you restart the computer, the computer may not start correctly. The computer stops responding ("hangs").CAUSEThis problem may occur when you restart the computer after you install McAfee Parental Controls on the computer and the Msdt.exe process consumes up to 99 percent of CPU resources. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, follow these steps to start the computer in Safe Mode, configure the Distribution Transaction Coordinator service and the McAfee Parental Control service to use the Manual startup type, and then remove McAfee Parental Controls from the computer. - Restart the computer in Safe Mode:
- Restart the computer.

- On the Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the ARROW keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
- If you have a dual-boot or multi-boot computer, select Microsoft Windows 2000 from the list that appears, and then press ENTER.
- Log on to the computer as a member of the administrators group.
- Configure the Distribution Transaction Coordinator service and the McAfee Parental Control service to use the Manual startup type:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
- In the list of services, right-click Distribution Transaction Coordinator, and then click Properties.
- Click the General tab.
- In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then click OK.
- In the list of services, right-click McAfee Parental Control, and then click Properties.
- Click the General tab.
- In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then click OK.
- Restart the server.

- Configure the Distribution Transaction Coordinator service to use the Automatic startup type:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
- In the list of services, right-click Distribution Transaction Coordinator, and then click Properties.
- Click the General tab.
- In the Startup type box, click Automatic, and then click OK.
