SUMMARYThis article describes how to change the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Mailroot folder location. When messages arrive at the Exchange 2003 computer through the SMTP service, the data is written to the hard disk as an .eml file. By default, these files are stored in the drive:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot folder on the same partition that Exchange 2003 is installed on.
In some scenarios, such as when you configure a bridgehead server, you can improve the performance of the Exchange 2003 computer if you move the Mailroot folder to a different hard disk or partition.
