You Cannot Turn Off Error Reporting in Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 2000 (821990)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series for Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

If an error occurs in Windows Media Player, Windows tries to report the error to Microsoft by sending an online error report. There is no option to not send this report.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you cannot turn off Windows Media Player 9 error reporting in Windows 2000.

WORKAROUND

To prevent Windows Media Player from sending an online error report, rename the Dw15.exe file in the Windows Media Player folder. When you do so, Windows Media Player creates an error log instead of an online error report. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Search, and then click All files and folders.
  2. Type:

    Dw15.exe

    .
  3. Verify that any file found is located in the Windows Media Player folder.
  4. Right-click the file, and then click Rename.
  5. Type:

    Dw15.old

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
