You can administer Exchange 2003 computers from a Windows XP Professional-based computer by using Exchange 2003 Setup to install only Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools.

To install the Exchange System Management Tools on a Windows XP-based client computer, follow these steps:

1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later on your client computer. For additional information about how to obtain the latest Windows XP Service Pack, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

2. Join the Windows XP-based computer to a domain that is inside the forest that is enabled for Exchange 2003.
3. Install Internet Information Services (IIS), World Wide Web Service, and SMTP Service on your client computer. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
   2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
   3. Click Internet Information Services (IIS), and then click Details.
   4. Click Appliction Server, and then click Details.
   5. Click to select the SMTP Service check box.
   6. Click to select the World Wide Web Service check box.
   7. Click OK two times, click Next, and then insert the appropriate media if you are prompted to do so.
   8. Click Finish, and then close Add or Remove Programs.
4. Install the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack (Adminpak.msi). To download the Adminpak.exe file, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

   http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

   Note Make sure that you use the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack, and not the version designed for Windows 2000 Server.
5. Install the Exchange System Management Tools on the client computer. To do this, run Exchange Server 2003 Setup.
6. On the Component Selection page, set the installation action to Custom, and then click Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools.
   
   Note After you run Setup, disable SMTP Service, or the World Wide Web Service if you do not intend to run them on the computer. Disabling nonessential services helps to increase the security of your computer.
