The Setup program cannot change the service account to a master domain account in Systems Management Server 2.0 (821843)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 Setup program to change the SMS service account from a resource domain account to a master domain account, the SMS Site Component Manager component may not be able to change the account.

The Sitecomp.log and Srvacct.log may have entries that are similar to the following:

Sitecomp.log:
Polling all servers...  
Polling component server WINDOWSNTBDC...  
Reinstalling component SMS_EXECUTIVE...  
Deinstalled the performance counters.  
Deinstalled as service SMS_EXECUTIVE.  
Starting bootstrap operations...  
Installed service SMS_SERVER_BOOTSTRAP_WINDOWSNTBDC.  
WINDOWSNTBDC was detected as a BDC. Starting to wait for PDC/BDC sync...  
Srvacct.log:
<05-26-2003 11:27:54> Max wait for PDC/BDC sync set to 30 minutes (default value)
<05-26-2003 11:27:54> Pre-sync: Error from NetUserGetInfo, level 20 (2221)
<05-26-2003 11:27:54> Waiting for PDC/BDC Sync (2221)
<05-26-2003 11:29:54> Pre-sync: Error from NetUserGetInfo, level 20 (2221)
<05-26-2003 11:29:54> Waiting for PDC/BDC Sync (2221)

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the SMS 2.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5) site server is installed on a backup domain controller (BDC).

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SMS service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, install your SMS 2.0 site server on a domain member server and not on a domain controller.
