Text that is added to the end of a hyperlink address in an e-mail message is not opened in Outlook 2003 (821694)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you type a Web hyperlink address in an e-mail message in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, press the SPACEBAR to activate the hyperlink address, press the LEFT ARROW key to return to the end of the hyperlink address, and then add more text to the end of the hyperlink address, the Auto-Hyperlink feature does not activate the added text.

If you press the BACKSPACE key instead of the LEFT ARROW key to go to the end of the hyperlink address, the hyperlink address is not de-activated.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you use Outlook 2003 as your default e-mail editor on Microsoft Windows 2000-based computers that have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.
  • Upgrade your operating system to Microsoft Windows XP.
  • Configure Microsoft Office Word 2003 as your e-mail editor.
To select Word 2003 as your e-mail editor, follow these steps:
  1. Start Outlook 2003.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Mail Format tab.
  4. Click to select the Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages check box.
  5. Click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
