OFFXP: Shortcuts Are Not Created After You Install Office XP (821459)

SYMPTOMS

After you install an Office XP program or Office XP itself, you may not be able to locate the product or its shortcut icons.

RESOLUTION

Repair Your Office Installation

  1. Quit all programs.
  2. Insert your Office XP CD in your CD-ROM or DVD drive.
  3. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  5. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office XP, and then click Change.
  6. In the Office XP Setup dialog box, click Repair Office.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation.
  9. Click to select the Restore my Start Menu Shortcuts check box.
  10. Click Install.

WORKAROUND

Manually Create Shortcut Icons

You have to search for the executable file for the program that you have installed. For example, if you install Microsoft Word 2002, search for the Winword.exe file.
  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. In the Search Companion pane, click All files and folders.
  3. Type the Program_file_name in the All or part of the name box.
  4. In the Look in box, click My Computer.
  5. Click Search.
  6. In the Search Results window, right-click the Program_file_name, click Send to, and then click Desktop (creates shortcut).
