TAPI only resolves an H.323 gateway DNS name on initialization in Windows 2000 (821439)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you use Telephony API (TAPI) and a Microsoft H.323 Telephony Services Provider, and configure an H.323 gateway to use a DNS name such as gateway.microsoft.com instead of an IP address, DNS names are only resolved by TAPI programs on initialization. Therefore, when you implement DNS round robin, the TAPI client will only talk to one gateway server and not to all gateway servers that DNS has listed for round robin.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because TAPI only resolves the H.323 gateway name on initialization. When the IP address that is obtained from the DNS belongs to a computer that is no longer available, TAPI cannot communicate with the H.323 gateway that is listed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
