ENT2001: Error Message: The Preferences File Could Not Be Opened (821405)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Entourage 2001, you may receive the following error message:
The Preferences file could not be opened. The end of file has been reached.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Preference file for your Entourage Identity is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must remove your current Identity Preference file and let Entourage create a new one. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Locate and open the folder that contains the files that make up the Identity that is experiencing problems.

    The Identities folders are found in the following default path:

    Drive:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Office 2001 Identities:Main Identity

  2. In the Identity folder, locate the Preferences file.
  3. Click the Preferences file, and then move the file to the Trash on the Macintosh desktop.
  4. Restart Entourage.

    In the New Account wizard, type the user information, messaging user name, password, and server address settings.
