PRB: Request Forwarding is Unsuccessful if SSL is Set to Accept Client Certificates (821132)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Application Center 2000
  • Microsoft Application Center 2000 SP1
  • Microsoft Application Center 2000 SP2

SYMPTOMS

If a Web site in an Application Center 2000 cluster is configured to use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), and if the Secure Communications option in the properties of the Web site is set to Accept client certificates, request forwarding is unsuccessful.

Note: If Ignore client certificates is selected, request forwarding succeeds.

When you visit a site that has this property setting, a long delay may occur, and you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site https://server/test.asp
The connection with the server was reset.

CAUSE

Request forwarding does not support client certificates.

RESOLUTION

Do not use client certificates on a site with request forwarding.

If you use request forwarding, set the Web site property under Secure Communications to Ignore client certificates.
