Outlook 2002 does not respond, and you experience a 4-second to 5-second delay (821109)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Outlook 2002 Service Pack 2 (SP-2), when used with:
- the operating system: Microsoft Windows XP SP1
SYMPTOMSWhen you try to use Microsoft Outlook 2002, some of the following conditions may occur: - You may experience a 4-second to 5-second delay in Microsoft Outlook while Outlook appears to stop responding.
- New outgoing messages may be stuck in your Outbox.
- New incoming messages may not be delivered to your Inbox.
CAUSEThis behavior may occur when all the following conditions are true: - You install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1).
- You install Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2).
- You configure Microsoft Outlook with a Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox.
- You turn on Instant Messaging in Outlook, but you do not start Windows Messenger.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, install Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

WORKAROUNDTo work around this behavior, use one of the following methods: - Click a folder in Microsoft Outlook, and then click your Inbox.
- Start Windows Messenger.
- Turn off Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook (on the Tools menu, click Options, and then make sure Instant Messaging is turned off on the Other tab).
