SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) update, you receive the following error message:
Error: The Office 2000 SR-1 Core Update patch is missing or invalid.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if your computer does not have sufficient hard disk space for the download files for Office 2000 SR-1. There are two files that make up the SR-1 download: Data1.msp and Data2.msp. The sizes of the SR-1 files are:
  • Data1.msp: 27,412,992 Bytes
  • Data2.msp: 13,695,488 Bytes

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use any of the following methods:
  • You may be able to recover some disk space by quitting programs that you do not require.

After you quit the other programs, several minutes may pass before Microsoft Windows changes the size of its paging file.
  • You can free disk space by deleting files that you do not require.

You can do this by using the Disk Cleanup Tool. To use the Disk Cleanup Tool, follow these steps.

Note Disk Cleanup is available in Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows XP.
    1. Click Start, point to Programs (in Windows XP, point to All Programs ), point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
    2. In the Select Drive dialog box, click to select the drive that you want to clean up, for example: C:\, and then click OK.
    3. On the Disk Cleanup tab, click to select each of the options that you want to remove files from.
    4. Click OK.
