Windows Media Player Shortcut Is Added to the Desktop After You Run Sysprep (820936)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you run Sysprep on your Windows XP computer, a shortcut to Windows Media Player is created on your desktop.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. In the version of Sysprep that is included in Windows XP before Service Pack 1 (SP1), Sysprep deletes all desktop icons except for the Recycle Bin. In the version of Sysprep that is included in Windows XP SP1, Sysprep leaves desktop icons that are shortcuts to Microsoft Internet Explorer, to The Microsoft Network (MSN), and to Microsoft Windows Media Player.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use an Unattend.txt file during setup to remove access to these items. For additional information about Sysprep and answer files, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
