You cannot set a numbering format expectedly after you apply a numbering sequence in OneNote 2003 (820708)

SYMPTOMS

When you apply a numbering format to a list, and then apply a numbering sequence to that list, the numbering format changes unexpectedly. The list no longer has the numbering format that you expect.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a blank line in the list or at the end of the list.

WORKAROUND

Before you apply a numbering format or a numbering sequence to a list, delete any blank lines from the list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Start OneNote.
  2. Press the TAB key.
  3. Type a list similar to the following:

    Test a
    Test b

    Test c
    Test d
    Test e

    Note Make sure that there is a blank line somewhere in the list.
  4. Select the outline.
  5. On the standard toolbar, click Numbering.

    The list now looks similar to the following:

    1. Test a
    2. Test b

    3. Test c
    4. Test d
    5. Test e
  6. On the View menu, click Task Pane.
  7. In the title bar of the task pane, click the arrow, and then click Numbering.
  8. In the Apply numbering format box, click (1), (2), (3), (4), (5) ....

    The list now looks similar to the following:

    (1) Test a
    (2) Test b

    (3) Test c
    (4) Test d
    (5) Test e
  9. Click Customize numbering.
  10. In the Apply a sequence box, click A, B, C, D, E ....
Actual result:

A) Test a
B) Test b

C) Test c
D) Test d
E) Test e

Expected result:

A Test a
B Test b

C Test c
D Test d
E Test e
