Streaking and banding appears on the printed page when you print a publication in Publisher 2003 (820701)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2003
  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 with Digital Image Pro

SYMPTOMS

When you print your Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 publication in the red, green, and blue (RGB) composite colorspace, on some printers you may notice excessive streaking or banding of transparent object fills on the printed page.

CAUSE

This problem may occur with PostScript printers that can print at 1200 dots-per-inch (dpi) or greater resolution. Publisher 2003 uses an irregular pattern for transparent fills, generally known as a "screen door". On some high resolution printers, this pattern may not line up correctly, causing bands or streaks to appear in the printout.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can create the multilayered transparency effect in another program, such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or Corel Draw. Save the image as an Encapsulated PostScript File (EPS) graphic, and then link to the image so that it is correctly processed by the printer on output. You can also insert the EPS graphic, embedding the graphic in your publication. It is best that you link to the EPS file if you are going to use a professional prepress or printer service.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Link menu, point to Picture, and then click From file.
  2. Select the picture that you have created.
  3. Click the down arrow next to Insert, and then click Link to file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
