Windows 2000 does not recognize OSPF network interface update (820681)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

If the link between two routers is removed, the OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) protocol does not work correctly, and the dial-up route is not initiated when you use Microsoft Windows Server 2000.

CAUSE

When the secondary interface is disabled, the secondary router does not send a link state update. Therefore, the router table is never updated, and the demand dial interface is never dialed on the primary router.

RESOLUTION

This behavior is by design.

WORKAROUND

You can use RIP (Routing Information Protocol) to work around this issue.
