XADM: Information Store Process Quits and the Server Stops Responding After You Install the March 2003 Exchange 2000 Server Post-SP3 Rollup Package (820522)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

After you install the March 2003 Exchange 2000 Server post-Service Pack 3 (SP3) rollup package that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article, the server may stop unexpectedly, and a Stop error message may appear on a blue screen:

813840 XGEN: March 2003 Exchange 2000 Server Post-Service Pack 3 Rollup

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a regression in the Exifs.sys kernel mode file system driver introduced in the March 2003 post-SP3 rollup package. This bug may inadvertently decrement the process handle reference count to zero. As a result, the information store process (Store.exe) may stop. When this problem occurs, if a thread tries to use a handle that it currently holds to the Store.exe process, the server may stop unexpectedly, and a Stop error message may appear on a blue screen.
