Server for NIS Cannot Migrate Users and Groups Where the Names Conflict with the Computer Name (820160)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.0

SYMPTOMS

Server for Network Information Service (NIS) does not migrate users and groups that have the same name as a computer.

CAUSE

User names, group names, and computer names exist in separate namespaces in NIS. However, they occupy the same namespace in Active Directory Service. Server for NIS reports the name conflict in the migration log file, and does not migrate the user or group.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a limitation in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

A command line option "-n" is added to the nis2ad utility. When you run the nis2ad utility using this option, and if a user name or group name conflicts with a computer name (or vice versa), the SamAccountName attribute of the computer is changed to the following form: <domainname>_c_<computername>.

This fix does not apply to the Migration wizard. Conflicts are noted and skipped as before.

NIS user names are contained in the "passwd" map. Group names are contained in the "group" map. Computer names are contained in the "hosts" map.

Note that Server for NIS migration already resolves user-group conflicts.
