Virtual Servers Are Removed from the All Computers List (820136)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you monitor a clustered virtual server in Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), the virtual server may be removed from the All Computers node in the MOM Administrator Console. If you click Components, and then click Agents, the virtual server has a status of Delayed.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • You are using a configuration group with more than one DCAM.
  • The virtual server is listed in the Managed Computer Rule (MCR) of only one DCAM.
  • A DCAM that does not have the virtual server listed in its MCR scans the managed nodes after the DCAM that owns the virtual server has completed its scan of the nodes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the virtual server to the MCR list on all the DCAMs. The DCAM does not remove the virtual server if it is listed as a managed node inside the MCR of the DCAM, even if the managed node has been unresponsive.

MORE INFORMATION

When the agents are installed on a physical server, the agents periodically send a heartbeat notification to maintain a current status. The component status of the virtual node is "delayed" because the MOM agents are not cluster aware.

If only one DCAM has the virtual server in its Managed Computer Rule, then the second DCAM removes the virtual server from the list of managed computers after completing its scan. When the second DCAM starts to scan the nodes, the following actions occur:
  1. The second DCAM retrieves the list of managed nodes from the MOM database. This includes the virtual server, even if the virtual server is not listed in the MCR of the second DCAM.
  2. Next, the second DCAM computes the delay from the last heartbeat received. Because the agents for the virtual server do not send a heartbeat, the time value becomes NULL. The DCAM interprets this value as 01/01/1970 01:00:00.
  3. Because a long time has passed since the last heartbeat was received, the DCAM removes the virtual server from the list of managed nodes by setting the IsAgent value to 0 for the virtual server in the MOM database.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
