SYMPTOMS
You are using a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer that is joined to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based domain. On the Security tab in the properties dialog box for a folder in Windows XP, security groups and distribution groups are displayed by using a Security Accounts Manager (SAM) account name instead of a common name. The format appears as follows:
sAMAccountName (Domain\sAMAccountName)
Note sAMAccountName is the value of the Active Directory directory service
sAMAccountName attribute.
Domain is the name of your domain.
The security groups and the distribution groups are displayed in this format when you run a command-line utility to view the security permissions of an object.
For example, this format is used when you run the Cacls.exe utility.
Note The sAMAccountName is the logon name that is used to support clients and servers in earlier versions of Windows. For example, this logon name is used in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and earlier versions, Microsoft Windows 95, and Microsoft Windows 98.
User accounts in the properties dialog box of a folder are displayed by using their common name. User accounts appear in the following format:
User Name (Alias@domain.com)
This behavior causes the group display name to be different from the pre-Microsoft Windows 2000 group name (the
sAMAccountName attribute). Therefore, you may not be able to determine the correct group to which to apply security permissions.
