The Recycle Bin Is Corrupted or Not Valid in Windows Server 2003 (819766)

SYMPTOMS

If you are using a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you cannot access your Recycle Bin. When you double-click the Recycle Bin, you may receive an error message that states that the Recycle Bin is either corrupted or not valid.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Active Directory Migration Tool v2 was used to migrate your profile to a new computer. This problem does not occur if the Recycle Bin was empty before the migration.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this fix.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem if you are a system administrator, empty the Recycle Bin of all users of the computer before the migration.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
