You receive a Publisher cannot print this publication error message when you print as CMYK composite in Publisher 2003 (819594)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2003
  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 with Digital Image Pro

SYMPTOMS

When you try to print a publication as separations or as a composite cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CMYK) print output, you may receive the following error message:
Publisher cannot print this publication. To print composite CMYK or separations, you must use a printer driver that is set to output PostScript language level 2 or later.

CAUSE

There are three possible causes for this error message:
  1. You are printing to a printer driver that does not support PostScript Level 2 (or later.)
  2. Your printer driver does support PostScript Level 2 (or later), but your printer driver is set to PostScript Level 1.
  3. You are printing to a non-PostScript printer.
Publisher 2003 requires features not found in PostScript Level 1 to print CMYK composite or separated PostScript.

Because you can use Publisher to print red-green-black (RGB) and Grayscale output to non-PostScript and PostScript Level 1 printers, Publisher does not check the PostScript Language Level until you try to print.

RESOLUTION

Check the settings for your printer driver.
  1. In Publisher, click Page Setup on the File menu.
  2. Click the Printer and Paper tab.
  3. In the Name list, click the driver for the printer that you are trying to use.
  4. Click Properties.
  5. On the Layout tab or the Paper/Quality tab, click Advanced.
  6. Expand PostScript Options.
  7. Change PostScript Language Level from 1 to 2 or 3, depending on what your print output device actually supports.
If there is no PostScript Language Level choice, the printer driver only supports PostScript Level 1. If this is the case, contact the manufacturer of your PostScript printer, image setter, or proof printer, and find out if it supports at least PostScript Level 2. If it does, obtain the updated PostScript drivers from the manufacturer.
Note The "MS Publisher Imagesetter" and "MS Publisher Color Printer" drivers that are included with Windows and earlier versions of Publisher are PostScript Level 1 drivers. However, the Generic Color PS for Commercial Printing printer driver included with Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 does support PostScript Levels 2 and 3.

For more information about how to install this printer driver, click Microsoft Publisher Help on the Help menu, type Install the Generic Color PS for Commercial printing printer driver in the Search text box of Assistance, and then click Search to view the topic.
