SUMMARY

When Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 receives and routes to the recipient a Rich Text Format (RTF) message that requests notification when a message has been read (a "read receipt"), and the recipient uses Microsoft Outlook 2000 to read the message, a read receipt is generated and automatically sent to the sender.

In some situations, internal information may therefore be sent outside your organization.

A supported feature that modifies the product's default behavior is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to modify the behavior that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that specifically need it. This feature may receive additional testing. Therefore, if your system is not severely affected by the lack of this feature, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 service pack that contains this feature.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Note Because of file dependencies, this feature requires Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 4 (SP4).

This fix adds a registry entry to filter all read notification messages when they are sent to the Internet. To configure this entry:

Click Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then double-click the following DWORD entry in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIMC\Parameters\AlwaysSuppressRN
In the Value data box, type the number 1 to filter all read notification messages before they are sent to the Internet.

Note Any value other than 1 will result in the default behavior.
Restart the computer.
