Xbox: You experience game latency (slowness) and stoppages when using Xbox Live (819072)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Xbox Live
  • Xbox Video Game System

SYMPTOMS

While playing a game on Xbox Live, you may experience one or both of the following symptoms:
  • Gameplay is slow, or there is a lag between actions.
  • One specific game does not work online, whereas other games do work online.

THINGS TO TRY

If you are experiencing latency (slowness) in gameplay, or if a specific game is not working online, use the following troubleshooting steps:
  1. Determine the bandwidth usage of your network connection. If you use your network connection for an Xbox console and a computer, the two devices share the network bandwidth. Try to play the game while the network is not being used on the computer.
  2. Try to play the game at different times of the day. Typically, residential high-speed networks experience most network traffic in the evenings when people are at home using their computers. This is true of both Cable networks and DSL networks. To view an article about increasing online gaming speed, visit the following Xbox Web site:

  3. Determine whether the Xbox Live service is experiencing problems. For more information, visit the following Xbox Web site:

MORE INFORMATION

You may also experience latency on Xbox Live if you join an individual session whose host has limited bandwidth. Hosting a game session with limited bandwidth slows down the session for every player, as the peer-to-peer connection is using the host's line.
