MAPI cannot detect profile use between Terminal Services sessions (818861)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5
  • MAPI

SYMPTOMS

When MAPI is initialized, it performs a query to determine if any dynamically-created profiles that are in the registry are in use. If no reference to a profile is found in memory, the profile is removed from the registry. When MAPI is initialized in a Terminal Services session, the default scope of the search is limited to the active Terminal Services session. Therefore, if the same Microsoft Windows NT account is logged in to two different Terminal Services sessions at the same time, MAPI cannot successfully determine if a profile in the registry is in use. When MAPI cannot successfully determine if a profile in the registry is in use in this situation, MAPI removes the profile from the registry. The removal of the profile also affects the other Terminal Services session.

This problem also affects Mailbox Manager and many other Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 services that rely on MAPI when the Exchange service account is used to log on to an Exchange Server 5.5 computer by using a Terminal Services session.
