FIX: Error in Visual SourceSafe with file names that have more than 32 characters (818611)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual SourceSafe, 32-bit, for Windows 6.0d

SYMPTOMS

When you try to share a file in a different project tree in Microsoft Visual SourceSafe Explorer, you may receive an error that is similar to the following:

An item with the name Name already exists
This error only occurs if a file already exists with a file name that is begins with the same 32 characters. If you change one of the first 32 characters of one of the file names, the error will not appear.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
