The Microsoft Office 97 Setup program accepts optional switches that you can use to control how the Setup program operates. This article lists the switches and describes the functionality of each switch.

You can run the Office Setup program from a command line. If you run Setup from a command line, you can add parameters to the command that allow you to specify certain options (for example, select a Typical installation or create a network installation log).

To run Setup from a command line, follow these steps:
  1. In Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows XP: Click Start, and then click Run.

    In Microsoft Windows NT 3.51: Click Run on the Program Manager File menu.
  2. Type the location that you are installing from, and then type the word setup. For example, type A:\Setup or X:\Msoffice\Setup

    If you want to add a command-line option, type it after the command. For example, to run Setup in administrative mode, type A:\Setup /a

Command-line Switch Options and Their Descriptions

The following list shows the command-line options recognized by the Office Setup program.

Note The brackets ( { } ) in the following command-line switch options are optional settings. Do not type the brackets if you use these settings.
  • /a Creates an administrative installation point. Valid only when you run Setup from CD or floppy disks.
  • /b number Bypasses the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog box by selecting the type of installation:
    • /b 1 : Typical
    • /b 2 : Custom
    • /b 3 : Run from CD or run from network server
  • /c "number" Bypasses the dialog box where you type the 20-character Product ID from the OEM Certificate of Authorization for validation. Instead, this option uses the number that you specify.
  • /f Specifies that all files be created with an eight-character file name and a three-character extension, instead of with a long file name.
  • /g{+} "file" Generates a log file that records details of the Setup process. If you specify +, Setup appends new information to the log file instead of overwriting it.
  • /gc{+} "file" Does the same as /g, except all calls and returns from custom actions are also logged. This can make the log file very large.
  • /k "number" Bypasses the dialog box where you type the 11-digit key from the CD sticker for validation. Instead, this option uses the number that you specify.
  • /l "file" Overrides the default .lst file (Setup.lst) with the specified file.
  • /m number Specifies the Microsoft License Pak (MLP) licensing information that you must have to activate the MLP for floppy disks. Setup does not install any software, but terminates immediately after it sets the count at the number you specify.
  • /n "" Prompts for a user name to use if no default user name exists in the registry.
  • /n "name" Specifies the user name to use if no default user name exists in the registry.
  • /o "" Prompts for an organization name to use if no default organization name exists in the registry.
  • /o "organization" Specifies the organization name to use if no default organization exists in the registry.
  • /q{option} Specifies the level of user interaction for batch mode installation:
    • 0 Suppresses all dialog boxes except the final one. Using 0 is the same as using no argument.
    • 1 Suppresses all dialog boxes, including the final one.
    • t Suppresses all Setup user interface elements.
  • /qn{option} Does the same as /q, except that the computer is not restarted and 0 is not a valid value. To suppress all dialog boxes except the final one, use /qn with no argument.
    • 0 Suppresses all dialog boxes except the final one. Using 0 is the same as using no argument.
    • 1 Suppresses all dialog boxes, including the final one.
    • t Suppresses all Setup user interface elements.
  • /r Reinstalls a program. Use in maintenance mode only.
  • /s "folder" Overrides the default source (the folder containing Setup.exe or the source specified in the maintenance mode STF file) with the specified folder.
  • /u{a} Removes Office. If you specify a, shared components are removed without your being prompted; otherwise, you are prompted before removing shared components. Use in maintenance mode only.
  • /x "file" Creates a network installation log file for tracking the number of installations made from an administrative installation point. This overrides the value, if any, specified in the STF file.
  • /y Proceeds typically, including setting registry entries, but does not copy any files to your disk. Use this option to restore registry values or to track down processing problems.
Note If you type any parameter that is not valid, Setup displays a partial list of valid command-line options.

When you combine options on the same command line, consider the following:
  • Command-line switches are not case-sensitive; for example, /A is the same as /a.
  • Separate multiple switches by a blank space. For example, use the following command to restore Office registry settings:

    Setup /y /r

  • The /a and /q options are mutually exclusive; if you use both, you receive a usage error message.
  • The /n option is ignored if /a is used.
  • The /u and /r options are mutually exclusive; if you use both, you receive a usage error message.
  • The prompt elicited by the /u option is suppressed if you use /q with it. The shared components are not removed.
