"Error 0x80040403 (MAPI_E_TABLE_TOO_BIG)" error message when you click Public Folder Instances in Exchange System Manager (818531)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Public Folder Instances under Public Folder Store ServerName in Exchange System Manager to view your public folder instances, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
Error 0x80040403 (MAPI_E_TABLE_TOO_BIG).

CAUSE

This problem occurs if there are more than 65,535 public folders in the public folder store. The maximum number of rows that a MAPI table contains is 65,535 rows.

RESOLUTION

When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

After You Apply This Hotfix

After you apply this hotfix, you can configure the maximum number of rows that you want for the MAPI table. To do so, add the MaxAllowedRows DWORD value to the following registry key, and then set the value to the number of rows that you want:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Applications\Mmc

To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
  3. Locate, and then click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Applications

  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  5. Type mmc, and then press ENTER.
  6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  7. Type MaxAllowedRows, and then press ENTER.
  8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  9. In the Value data box, type the maximum number of rows that you want to set for the MAPI table, and then click OK.

    For example, if you want to configure the MAPI table to contain 200,000 rows for public folders, click Decimal, type 200000 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

    Note If you specify a value that is less than 65,535 rows, the maximum number of rows that the MAPI table contains is 65,335 (or 0x000ffff in hexadecimal format).
  10. Quit Registry Editor.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
