You receive a "You cannot save while the file is in use by another process" error message when you try to save an AutoRecover file in Word (818103)

SYMPTOMSWhen you try to save an AutoRecover file (*.asd) in Microsoft Word, you may receive an error message similar to the following: You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving the file with a new name. (C:\...\Word\AutoRecovery save of @1!.asd) When you click OK, you receive the following error message: Saving the AutoRecovery file is postponed for filename. When you click OK in response to this error message, you receive the first error message again. Note To close these error messages, click Close (the X in the upper-right corner of the error message boxes). CAUSEThis problem may occur when you use one or more of the following characters as part of the file name for the document: - Percent (%)
- Number sign (#)
- Exclamation point (!)
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, turn off the AutoRecover feature. To do this, follow these steps: - Start Word.
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Save tab, and then click to clear the Save AutoRecover info every check box.
- Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
