"The Remote Procedure Call Failed" Error Message Occurs When You Stop the Firewall Service (818036)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000

SYMPTOMS

After you install Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, if you stop the Microsoft Firewall service in ISA Server 2000 by right-clicking the Firewall service in the ISA Management utility, and then clicking Stop, you may receive the following error message:
The remote procedure call failed.
Note The Microsoft Firewall service successfully stops even though you receive this error message.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a new remote procedure call (RPC) error return value in Windows Server 2003.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the ISA Server 2000 Required Updates for Windows Server 2003 package described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, stop the Microsoft Firewall services by using the Services Control Panel tool. To do so:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In the Name list, right-click Microsoft Firewall, and then click Stop.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
