SYMPTOMSThe Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) management
information base (MIB) is installed on your Windows Server 2003-based computer,
but it is not active. CAUSEThis behavior occurs because when you install WINS,
the WINS MIB is installed, but it is not automatically activated. This is the default behavior. WORKAROUNDWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To work around this behavior, edit the
registry to manually activate the WINS MIB: - Click Start, click Run,
type Regedit in the Open box, and then
click OK.
- Create a DWORD value named AllowMIB. To do so, follow these steps:
- Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WINS\Parameters
- On the Edit menu, point to
New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type AllowMIB, and then press
ENTER.
- Double-click the AllowMIB value
that you created in the previous step.
- In the Value data box, type 1, and
then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
To disable the WINS MIB, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run,
type Regedit in the Open box, and then
click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WINS\Parameters
- Double-click the AllowMIB value in
the right pane.
- In the Value data box, type 0, and
then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
Note You do not have to restart the computer after you disable
the WINS MIB. When the registry value is set to 0, WINS
MIB stops processing any incoming SNMP requests and you receive the following message: SNMP_ERRORSTATUS_NOSUCHNAME
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
