"Setup has detected a pointing device program already installed" error message when you install Microsoft IntelliPoint Software (817456)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft IntelliPoint software on your computer, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Setup has detected a pointing device program already installed on this system which may impair Intellipoint software functionality.

Setup must remove this program in order to install IntelliPoint. Click OK to remove pointing device program and continue with setup or click cancel to exit setup.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if Synaptics TouchPad software is installed on your computer. This software may prevent the installation of the products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, disable or remove the Synaptics TouchPad software from the computer. To do so, see the program documentation or visit the following Synaptics Web site:
