You cannot type your whole certificate's name in the "Your Certificate's Name" box in Office 2003 (816946)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to type your certificate's name in the Your certificate's name box in the Create Digital Certificate dialog box, you may not be able to type the whole name.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when your certificate's name contains more than 259 characters. The Your certificate's name box has a 259-character limitation.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, make sure that your certificate's name contains no more than 259 characters.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

The Create Digital Certificate program creates a self-signed digital certificate that bears the name that you type.

To create a digital certificate, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open dialog box, click Browse.
  3. Navigate to the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 2003

  4. Double-click the Selfcert.exe file. The Create Digital Certificate program opens.
  5. In the Your certificate's name box, type a certificate name (up to 259 characters), and then click OK.
  6. Click OK in response to the following message:

    Successfully created a new certificate for Your certificate's name.
