Unable to Load Device Driver tcpip.sys (816743)



The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS


After you restart Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0, you may get the following popup message: Unable to Load Device Driver : 
	   SystemRoot\System32\drivers\tcpip.sys device driver could not be loaded. Also you may see the following error in the system event logs:

	   Event ID 26
	   Source:  Application Popup
	   Description: System Process - Unable to Load Device Driver : 
	   SystemRoot\System32\drivers\tcpip.sys device driver could not be loaded.  
	   Error Status was 0xc0000034  event id 26 
and 
	   Event ID 26
	   Source:  Application Popup
	   Description: System Process - Unable to Load Device Driver : 
	   SystemRoot\System32\drivers\afd.sys device driver could not be loaded.  
	   Error Status was 0xc0000034  event id 26.

CAUSE


The file TDI.SYS is missing from %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder.

RESOLUTION


Copy  TDI.SYS file from the Service Pack CDROM to the %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder.

MORE INFORMATION

Please note that the tdi.sys file is by default protected by the Windows File Protection feature under Windows 2000. Thus when it happens that the tdi.sys file is accidentally deleted, Windows 2000 prompts the administrator for Windows 2000 installation CDROM in order to replace the file. Administrator should not cancel this prompt.
