XADM: "No Process Is on the Other End of the Pipe" Appears in the NNTP Virtual Directory Status Column (815915)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
SYMPTOMSWhen you point the default NNTP Virtual Server virtual
directory to a new public folder tree or to a folder on the local hard disk,
and then point it back to the default location, the following information may
be displayed in the Status column in Exchange System Manager
for that virtual directory: No process is on the other
end of the pipe. An example of the default location might be Public
Folders/Internet Newsgroups. If you restart the Exchange Information Store to
resolve this issue as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB)
article, the issue is not resolved: 306929 XCON: "No Process Is on the Other End of the Pipe" Message When You Point NNTP Virtual Directory at New Public Folder Tree
CAUSEThis issue occurs when you use the Exchange System Manager
utility to modify the NNTP Virtual Server's virtual directory on another
Exchange 2000 Server computer. This issue occurs because when you remotely
modify the NNTP Virtual Server virtual directory mapping, the public folder
picker component uses the GUID of the public folder on the local computer.
Because of this, an incorrect messaging database (MDB) GUID is assigned to the
remote public folder. The NNTP service only works if the GUID of the MDB is
from the local computer. However, the public folder picker component does not
currently restrict the MDB to the destination server. WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, re-assign the virtual directory
mapping by using the Exchange System Manager utility on the computer that
contains the NNTP Virtual Server:
- Log on to the Exchange 2000 Server computer that contains
the NNTP Virtual Server whose virtual directory you want to modify.
- Start Exchange System Manager.
- If administrative groups are enabled, expand
Administrative Groups, and then expand your administrative
group.
- Expand Servers, expand the local server,
expand Protocols, expand NNTP, expand
Default NNTP Virtual Server, and then click Virtual
Directories.
- In the right pane, double-click Default in
the Newsgroup Subtree column.
- Click Contents, and then click
Browse next to the Custom path
box.
- Click the public folder that contains the newsgroup public
folder, and then click OK. For example, click Internet
Newsgroups under Public
Folders(Servername).
- Click OK, click OK on the
message that states that changing the directory could result in lost news
content, and then click OK.
- If the control item in the
Newsgroup Subtree has a status of "No process is on the other
end of the pipe":
- Double-click control, and then click
Contents.
- Note the path in the Local path box,
and then click Browse.
- Click the same folder that you noted in the previous
step.
- Click OK, click OK,
click OK on the message that states that changing the
directory could result in lost news content, and then click
OK.
- Restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service:
- Click Start, click
Run, type services.msc in the
Open box, and then click OK.
- In the list of services, right-click Microsoft
Exchange Information Store, and then click
Restart.
- Refresh the Exchange System Manager display. To do this,
press F5.
