Metabase.bin File Is Not Created on Clean Installations of IIS 6.0 (815435)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Information Services version 6.0
SYMPTOMSSome backup software may report error messages that indicate that Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 configuration information is not being backed up. CAUSESome backup software may explicitly look for the existence of the Metabase.bin file to determine if the IIS configuration has been backed up successfully. In versions of IIS that are earlier than IIS 6.0, configuration information is stored in the Metabase.bin file. However, on a clean installation of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0, no Metabase.bin file is created. Instead, the configuration information is located in the Metabase.xml file and in the Mbschema.xml file. RESOLUTIONTo prevent backup software from reporting that the IIS configuration was not backed up, create a text file in the %systemroot%/System32/Inetsrv directory, and then name the file Metabase.bin.
To make sure that IIS configuration information is backed up, back up the whole Inetsrv directory.STATUS Microsoft has
confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the
beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATIONWhen you upgrade from Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 or Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0, the original Metabase.bin file is deleted and a text file that is named Metabase.bin is created in the same location. This is for backward compatibility so that backup software that looks for the existence of the Metabase.bin file will not report errors.REFERENCES
