SYMPTOMS

After you install an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) device to your computer (in the UPS tab of the Power Options tool in Control Panel), you may find that the computer unexpectedly shuts down. When you restart the computer, the computer immediately shuts down again.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the COM port that you specify for the UPS device is already in use by another device, such as a modem.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the device that is using the COM port that you specified for the UPS device. For example, if you specify that the UPS device use COM 1 and the modem that is installed on your computer also uses COM 1, disconnect the modem from COM 1.

MORE INFORMATION

To install and configure a UPS device that connects to the serial port of your computer, click the UPS tab in the Power Options tool of Control Panel. The UPS settings that you can configure depend on the specific UPS hardware that is installed on the computer. The settings can include options such as the following:
  • The serial port where the UPS device is connected.
  • The condition that triggers the UPS device to send a signal, such as when a utility power failure occurs, when battery power is low, or when a remote shutdown by the UPS device occurs.
  • The time intervals for maintaining battery power, for recharging the battery, and for sending warning messages after a power failure occurs.
