SYMPTOMS

After you have worked with Offline Files and have added lots of data or after you have set up a Folder Redirection (for example, a redirected My Documents folder), you may receive the following error message during the subsequent synchronization process:
Window Title: Synchronization Complete
Errors occurred while Windows was synchronizing your data.
The following error message may appear on the Results tab:
Offline Files ('\\server\share' on server):
Unable to connect to '\\server\share.'
The specified network name is no longer available.
The following text may appear on the Progress tab:
\\server\share on server Failed
The Offline File Status window displays the following message:
You are working online on 'server', but changes you made offline have not been synchronized.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if any of the following conditions are true:
  • The server is out of disk space for synchronizing offline files. By default, disk space for automatically cached files is limited to 10 percent of the system disk. If you do not configure the Default cache size policy setting, the default is used.
  • There is a timing issue that occurs when Offline Files components (Cscui.dll, Cscdll.dll) interact with the redirector (Mrxsmb.sys, Rdbss.sys).
  • Server message block (SMB) communication has stopped because of server resource problems.

MORE INFORMATION

If you have installed the hotfixes that are mentioned in the "Resolution" section yet the issue is not resolved, capture the network traffic between the failing client and the file server that holds the share for offline folders.

Network traces may show that the client stops SMB traffic ungracefully by sending a TCP FIN or a "server not responding to SMB requests in time" message.

If you suspect a server resource problem, restart the server, and then use Performance Monitor to find the root cause of the server resource problem. Typically, such resource problems are caused by kernel mode file system filter drivers that are installed by antivirus software or backup agents.
