Opening certain programs causes repair of Journal Viewer to start (815036)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you open certain programs in Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows 2000, the repair process starts for the Microsoft Windows Journal Viewer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of an incorrect registration of the Windows Journal Viewer in the registry. Certain programs share components with Windows Journal Viewer. When you start one of those programs, the Windows Installer repair process for Windows Journal Viewer starts and tries to clean up the registration for that user's profile.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, permit the Windows Journal Viewer repair process to complete. If the repair succeeds, the Windows Installer dialog box only occurs one time. However, the dialog box may also appear one time for each additional user account that runs the same program on this computer.

If the repair does not complete successfully, you may receive an error message that contains a reference to a file path, and that is similar to the following error message:
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\temp\IXP000.tmp\
You may receive this error message if there is a problem with the existing installation of the Windows Journal Viewer, or a problem during the removal process. To resolve this behavior, remove the Windows Journal Viewer, and then reinstall it from the location that is mentioned in the "More Information" section of this article.

To remove Microsoft Journal Viewer, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then point to Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Windows Journal Viewer, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the program.

Note You may have to restart the computer to remove any files that were in use.
