Visio quits unexpectedly when you edit text in a Visio 2002 drawing (814992)

SYMPTOMS

When you edit text in a Visio shape, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
  • Visio quits unexpectedly.

    -or-
  • Visio quits unexpectedly and you receive an error message similar to the following:
    Microsoft Visio has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. The information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Visio can try to recover it for you.

    Restart Microsoft Visio.

    Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

    When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the following:
    AppName: visio.exe AppVer: 10.0.525.4 ModName: ntdll.dll

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you edit text that contains misspellings. In some situations, Visio lists the positions of misspelled words incorrectly.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

This problem is corrected in Microsoft Visio 2002 Service Pack 2.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Note: Because of file dependencies, this update requires that you have Visio 2002 SR-1 installed.



WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off the Check spelling as you type option. To do so:
  1. Start Visio.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Under the Spelling tab, remove the check mark next to Check spelling as you type, and then click OK.
If you turn off this feature, misspelled words are not underlined in red. However, Visio will still check the spelling of the whole drawing page if you press F7 or if you click Tools, and then clickSpelling.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in Visio 2002 Service Pack 2.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

The following steps require Visio_ABAS-GBP.vsd. This file is available as an attachment of Office QFE bug 7956 at the following location: http://bugcheck/bugs/OfficeQFE/7956.asp Download and save Visio_ABAS-GBP.vsd to a folder on your hard disk.
  1. Start Visio and open Visio_ABAS-GBP.vsd.
  2. Double-click any one of the three text boxes are in the lower-right corner of the drawing, and then click an empty area of the drawing.
  3. Repeat step 2 several times.

    You experience the behavior that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
