SLanguage Registry Entry in Spanish Windows NT 4.0 Has Value of ESP Instead of ESN (814959)

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Spanish version of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • Spanish or Spanish variation are the only available choices when you select the keyboard layout, and you may be limited in your selection of the time zone.
  • By default, the sLanguage registry entry has value ESP instead of ESN. ESP is the value for Spanish (Spain - Traditional Sort). ESN is the value for Spanish (Spain - Modern Sort).
This problem may affect custom applications that you use.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Spanish version of Windows NT 4.0 contains an incorrect value in the sLanguage entry under the following registry subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International

The sLanguage entry incorrectly has a value of ESP. It should have a value of ESN.

The corresponding locale ID (LCID) and three-letter abbreviations for the two major Spanish locales are:

Locale Name LCID 3-letter Name
Spanish(Spain - Traditional Sort) 040a ESP
Spanish(Spain - Modern Sort) 0c0a ESN

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To work around this issue so that new user profiles contain the correct settings, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the computer as the local administrator.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type RegEdt32.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Select HKEY_USERS, and then on the Registry menu, click Load Hive.
  4. Select the following file:

    %WinDir%\Profiles\Default User\NTUSER.DAT

  5. Type a name for the hive (for example, type default_user), and then click OK.)
  6. Open the following entry:

    HKEY_USERS\default_user\Control Panel\International\sLanguage

  7. Change this value from ESP to ESN, and then click OK.
  8. Unload this hive (Click HKEY_USERS\default_user, and then on the Registry menu, click Unload Hive. Click Yes to confirm.)
  9. Create a new user, log on as the new user, and then verify that the sLanguage entry for the new user is correct.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0.
